Two machines, one loop
Drying relies on a loop. An air mover blows a thin, fast layer of air across a wet surface, which carries moisture off it. A dehumidifier then removes that moisture from the air so the loop can continue. If the room is not closed, humid outdoor air keeps getting pulled in, and the dehumidifier cannot keep up. If there are fans but no dehumidifier, the air fills with vapor and drying slows to a crawl.
Refrigerant dehumidifiers work well at warm room temperatures, while desiccant types hold up better in cold spaces. A Wheat Ridge basement in January may favor the latter, while a summer basement does fine with the former.
Vocabulary you will hear
- Air mover
- A high-velocity fan that moves air across wet surfaces instead of cooling a room.
- Low-grain refrigerant unit
- A dehumidifier designed to keep working at lower humidity levels than a household unit.
- Desiccant dehumidifier
- A unit that uses a drying wheel instead of cold coils, useful in cold or very dry conditions.
- Grains per pound
- A measure of how much water vapor air holds; lower numbers mean drier air.
- Cavity drying
- Moving dry air into a wall or ceiling cavity through small openings.
Placement basics
- Aim along walls.Air movers are angled so air skims the surface instead of blowing into the middle of the room.
- Space them out.A common pattern is one for each wall run and one for each corner, adjusted by room shape.
- Close the room.Shut windows and doors to keep humidity from entering.
- Place the dehumidifier centrally.Keep intake and exhaust unobstructed, and drain the condensate to a sink or the floor drain.
- Check daily.Readings tell you when to move equipment or stop.
When equipment can come off
Equipment runs until readings approach a dry standard, which is set by comparing wet areas with unaffected parts of the same house. Stopping early because a floor feels dry to the hand is a common mistake. Moisture inside framing and concrete lingers after the surface feels fine.
A running dehumidifier also adds heat and noise, and an unattended machine can fill and shut off. If you manage drying yourself, set a calendar reminder to empty it and check progress.
Common questions
Can a household dehumidifier do the job?
For light dampness, yes. For a flooded room, larger or low-grain machines are used because household units slow down at lower humidity.
Is it normal for the basement to feel warm?
Yes. Dehumidifiers and fans give off heat, and warm air holds more moisture, which speeds evaporation.
